Edwin “Poodles” Hanneford Honored

Edwin “Poodles” Hanneford, the clown bareback rider known as the “riding fool” who died at his home on Kattskill Bay in 1967, has been inducted into the Capital Region Entertainment Hall of Fame.
Proctors Theater created the Hall of Fame two years ago to honor local residents who have made significant contributions to the entertainment industry.
The 2010 role of honor also includes Lake George High School graduate Rachael Ray. Adirondack Studios (formerly Adirondack Scenic), which was founded by Lake George Opera Festival alumni, was among the institutions admitted to the Hall of Fame this year.
Born in a circus wagon in Yorkshire England, Hanneford was descended from jugglers who entertained George III. He moved to the US in 1915 to join the Ringling Brothers circus, and came to Lake George to live after he retired from the circus in 1954. He continued to perform, however, appearing with his daughter Gracie at Frontier Town until the summer before his death.
Gracie Hanneford died in 2006, leaving a large bequest to the Lake George Scholarship Association.
Other members of the Capital Region Hall of Fame include Maureen O’Sullivan and Kirk Douglas. This 2010 induction ceremony took place on September 25 in Schenectady.
